Files can carry more information than the content you immediately see. This guide explains the practical details so you can choose what to keep, remove or verify before sharing.
Platforms reprocess files
Many online services resize, compress or re-encode uploaded images. That processing can remove some metadata, but the behavior can vary by service, upload path and product changes. It is better not to assume that a third party will always clean a file exactly the way you expect.
Your upload still reaches the platform
Even when a public copy later loses EXIF, the original upload may have already been delivered to the service. If location privacy matters, cleaning the file before upload gives you more control over what you initially send.
Metadata is only one signal
Account information, captions, posting time, visible landmarks and other context can reveal location or identity independently of EXIF. Privacy decisions should consider the entire post, not only the file properties.
Best practice
Create a cleaned sharing copy on your own device, inspect it, and upload that version. Keep your original privately if you need the metadata for your archive.
Use the relevant BeOutMeta tool on a copy of your file, then review the result before publishing or sending it.
