Files can carry more information than the content you immediately see. This guide explains the practical details so you can choose what to keep, remove or verify before sharing.

JPEG

JPEG commonly stores EXIF in APP1 segments and can also carry IPTC or XMP information. Because JPEG is widely used by cameras and phones, EXIF questions are especially common with this format.

PNG

PNG is organized into chunks. Textual and metadata-related chunks can contain information even though PNG is not usually associated with camera EXIF in the same way as JPEG. Modern workflows can also embed EXIF-related data in PNG.

WebP

WebP is a RIFF-based format and can include EXIF and XMP chunks. A WebP file therefore should not automatically be treated as metadata-free simply because it is a newer web format.

Why re-encoding helps

Creating a fresh image from decoded pixels is a format-agnostic way to avoid copying many metadata structures. The output still contains its basic file structure and dimensions, but normal source metadata blocks are not carried over.

Useful next step

Use the relevant BeOutMeta tool on a copy of your file, then review the result before publishing or sending it.
