Files can carry more information than the content you immediately see. This guide explains the practical details so you can choose what to keep, remove or verify before sharing.
Document information fields
PDF files can expose properties such as Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator and Producer. Applications may also save creation and modification dates. These fields can be useful for document management but may be unnecessary in a file shared publicly.
What XMP is
XMP is an extensible metadata format that can store richer structured information. A PDF may have a metadata stream referenced from its catalog. Removing or replacing that stream is different from simply blanking a visible title in an editor.
Why PDF cleaning is more complicated
PDF is a container format. It may include fonts, images, comments, forms, attachments, scripts, layers and other objects. Clearing common metadata fields does not prove that every hidden or historical item has been removed.
Use the correct risk level
For a public handout, clearing ordinary properties may be sufficient. For confidential legal, medical, financial or investigative material, use a professional sanitization and redaction process and verify the result independently.
Use the relevant BeOutMeta tool on a copy of your file, then review the result before publishing or sending it.
